Computer network is a system which consists of a computer network and other devices that work together to achieve a similar goal. The objectives of the network computer is:

Share resources: for example the use of shared printers, CPUs, memory, hard drive
Communication: for example, electronic mail, instant messaging, chat
Access to information: for example web browsing
To be able to achieve the same goal, every part of the network computer to request and provide services (service). The service is called requesting the client (the client) and provide the services called the waitress (server). This architecture is called client-server systems, and is used in almost all computer network applications.

Based on the classification scale:

Local Area Network (LAN)
Metropolitant Area Network (MAN)
Wide Area Network (WAN)
Based on the function: Basically, every computer network that functions as a client and the server. But there is a network that has a special computer as a dedicated server, while the other as a client. There is also a computer that does not have a specific function as a server only. Therefore, based on its function then there are two types of computer networks:

Client-server
Namely computer network with computers as a special dedicated server. A service / service can be provided by a computer or more. For example is a domain such as www.detik.com served by many computer web server. Or could also many service / services provided by a computer. For example jtk.polban.ac.id that the server is a computer with a multi-service, the mail server, web server, file server, database server and others.

Peer-to-peer
Namely computer network where each host can be a server and also a client simultaneously. For example in the file sharing between computers on the Windows Network Neighborhood Network there are 5 computer (we named A, B, C, D and E), which gives access to files held. At one time to access a file called B share from data_nilai.xls and also give access to files soal_uas.doc C. When accessing a file from the A B functions as a client and the access to the file C then function as a server. Both functions are performed simultaneously by a network like this is called peer to peer.

Based on topology: Based on [topology], computer network can be differentiated:

Bus topology
Star topology
Ring topology
Mesh topology (Random)
Tree Topology (hierarchical)
Linear Topology
